      http://abcnews.go.com/International/sunset-deadline-looms-isis-prisoner-swap/story?id=28572151

The Islamist rebel group ISIS has offered a prisoner exchange between a would-be ISIS suicide bomber, whose explosive vest malfunctioned when attempting to attack, and a Japanese journalist and Jordanian pilot. There were two Japanese hostages but ISIS claims that they killed one already through beheading. ISIS initially wanted two hundred million dollars to free the two hostages, but now they just want a prisoner exchange. ISIS's deadline for the exchange was Thursday at sunset (5:30pm) (9:30amEST) at the Turkish border. The deadline passed because the Jordanian government wanted proof that the pilot was still alive. Japanese hostage was forced to record a message saying that if the ISIS prisoner is not ready to be exchanged by the deadline, then the Jordanian pilot would be killed immediately. The pilot was captured after his jet crashed.

This relates to history because throughout wars there have been many people taken as a prisoner. In wars such as the civil and revolutionary war prisoners were exchanged for another. Unlike the prisoner exchanges in history, ISIS demands the exchange of prisoners by a certain deadline or else they will kill their prisoners. The opposing sides during the Civil War had a more civilized way of dealing exchanges between prisoners such as having a system that determines the equivalence of soldier ranks while ISIS has more of a murderous way to deal with exchanges such as threats of beheading.

In recent events s terrorist group called "ISIS" has taken a Japanese hostage and is threatening to kill him unless their demands are met. Their demands consist of a trade for a captured member of their organization that has been taken into custody. Japan and the United states are having trouble deciding on what actions they should take since the man in custody is very dangerous. This is not the first hostage ISIS has taken. They have recently captured and killed a number of British hostages and most recently they have killed a Japanese hostage held along with the hostage used for the exchange.

These events are similar to the prisoners of war taken during the civil war. Many of the confederate soldiers in general who surrendered to the northern army were taken as prisoners. They were held at camps that were designed for this purpose. These camps had terrible living conditions just like the hostages are currently in. This led to a spread in disease and the death of many of the prisoners. During the civil war, the North did not kill their prisoners like ISIS but the disease did. The North did not just take a few hostages either, they took a ton! They actually needed to build more camps to hold them. Then when Ulysses S. Grant captured many confederate positions, there was a huge spike in prisoners. There was little space to hold these new prisoners back in the camps. Right now, ISIS has had a spike in hostages taken. This is no longer a odd thing for them, it is becoming quite common among their organization. They have recently taken a large amount of hostages from many different areas. Hopefully these hostages can be freed like some of the prisoners taken in the civil war.

Mike Krzyzewski, basketball coach of the Duke Blue Devils, became the winningest division one college basketball coach in history on January 25th, 2015. They defeated St. John University by nine to reach this amazing feat. His win-loss record is a staggering 1000-308. That means that over his career Coach K has won about 76% of the times his team has taken the court with him at the head. The next closest coach to his record is Jim Boeheim who has 961 wins. Eighty-two of his wins came during the NCAA tournament which is the most among active coaches. In the 2014-2015 season, his Duke Blue Devils are 17-2 and ranked fourth among all college teams. In the game that became his 1000th win, freshmen Jahlil Okafor and Tyus Jones led the team with 17 and 22 points respectively. Both are expected to join the numerous Duke alumni coached by Krzyzewski to be drafted.
It may be a stretch to compare anyone to George Washington, but Coach K and Washington are similar in a few ways. One way that the two figures are similar is that both set precedent for future generations in their occupations. Coach K has influenced countless coaches over his 35+ year coaching career. In fact, twelve of the people that have gone through the Duke program have become head coaches at another school. Washington obviously set precedent for every President that followed him whether it be only taking two terms, taking a simple name like President, or the many others. Another similarity is that both have military backgrounds which I found interesting. Both men joined the army around the age of 21 and served for at least five years. A third reason that Coach K is similar to George Washington is that both men stayed loyal to who they were working for. Coach K has stayed with Duke since 1980 and turned down any big time job offered to him. Washington stayed loyal to the US throughout a war where everyone was double crossing each other and he helped the US become a respected nation. Lastly, both were first to do what they do. Coach K was the first to win 1000 games and Washington was the first to become President.

On the first week of January 2015 the time capsule buried by Paul Revere and Samuel Adams was opened. In 1855 the items placed inside of the leather pouch were moved into a brass box and reburied. The items placed inside of the leather pouch in 1775 were two dozen silver coins, and a silver plate with the date July 4, 1795 engraved on it. In the beginning of January, 2015 the brass box was opened at Boston museum of fine arts. Pam Hatchfield, using a porcupine quill and her grandfathers dental tools to take the items out of the box. When people reburied It in 1855, they added other items to the box, because originally it was just the silver coins and the silver plate. When they opened the box earlier this month, they found that newspapers were added. Knowing that the paper was extremely old and could rip easily they had to be very cautious about whether or not they should try to move the newspaper and open it. Some of the people working with this said it was almost like brain surgery they had to be that careful.
This relates to history because Sam Adams and Paul Revere were extremely important people in history. They buried this leather bag most likely hoping that one day people would find it and show it to everyone, in this case is exactly what happened. This is something very important now In present time because we get to see more facts of what happened the night Paul revere and Sam Adams were near the Cornerstone of the Massachusetts state house. Some of the coins and the silver plate they found will most likely be put into a museum for everyone to remember that day.

Topic : Politics ( Keystone Pipeline)

President Obama and the Republican party arguing over the Keystone pipeline and passing this tough vote and vetoes is another example of a lack of bipartisan agreement between the two parties. The pipeline has been an economic idea for years now and has been thought to have great economic benefits such as 42,100 jobs, and there is the possibility of oil spills through construction. Those supporting the idea of the pipeline would be president Obama and the democrats, while those opposing it would be the Republican party. Republican votes can be vetoed of course, however a few issues occurred such as a two - thirds majority vote to override the vetoes and win against the democratic party. The issue of bipartisanship has been present since 2011. However it was announced about a week ago that the Keystone vote had failed.

So how does this relate to history? The issue of bipartisanship has gone back hundreds of years, even to times such as the reconstruction period. Andrew Johnson often faced political opposition from radical republicans. Johnson’s reconstruction plans were less strict and he allowed Alexander Stephens, vice president of the confederacy to become senator of Georgia. This angered many republicans and they did not want Southern representatives to fill the seats so congress and the president debated. One might think that in the face of the end of the Civil War and the new birth of freedom Lincoln had granted under his presidency that the country would be stronger and more held together politically, but it wasn’t. This is how far back partisan struggles have gone to.

During the Miss Universe pageant, Miss Israel tried to get pictures with Miss Lebanon on many occasions. Because of the issues between Israel and Lebanon, Miss Lebanon tried to avoid being near Miss Israel at all costs. However Miss Lebanon says that Miss Israel photobomed her picture with Miss Slovenia and Miss Japan, giving her no time to get away. Miss Israel immediately posted the picture of her and Miss Lebanon on her Instagram, which cause a lot of controversy of Miss Lebanon’s loyalty to her country. Later Miss Lebanon reposted the same picture, but cropped out Miss Israel and explained how she did not intend for the picture to be taken and how she tried to avoid Miss Lebanon.
Miss Lebanon took herself out of the picture with Miss Israel, literally, just like the south took themselves out of the US. Miss Lebanon didn’t agree with what Miss Israel had done, so she reposted the same picture with Miss Israel cropped out. This is similar to when the Southern states seceded because they didn’t want to be in the same picture as the North. They didn’t agree with the politics of the North, especially with their views on slavery. The South decided to leave to prove their point and their loyalty to their southern cultures, as did Miss Lebanon but in her own way. Miss Lebanon reposted the picture and to show her loyalty to Lebanon by taking Miss Israel out of the picture and sharing it to the world.

  9. In these three articles they talk about how a new pipeline may be made and it is currently going through congress. This pipeline will be carying crude oil from Canada to Mexico. This bill is going through congress from the senate who didn't reach the required votes to pass. There is debate on if it will help fix oil spills that have been on the rise in the US for the past few years and if it will acomplish anything at all. There was one comment that i liked and it was ' there are only two kinds of piped that ones that have broken and the ones that will break'.
This can be related to the reconstruction period that came after the civil war. during reconstruction there was a debate on what should happen to the freedmen and what rights to give them and what to do with the confederate soliders and everyone else that secceded from the union. for the freedmen they were given three admendmentas to protect their rights like abolishing slavery, defined what a US citizen was, and it gave all men the right to vote. For the punishment that was given to the South was changed many times. First it was very forgiving it granted amnisisty and only required 10% of the south to swear allegiance to the union. After that Lincon was killed and his plan was brushed aside and they it became more strict until the final punishment was given. I fell like this specific part related to the the aricles because one of the plans to punish the south was proposed by Congress who was stronly controlled by republicans who wanted extreme punish ments. In the aricles that I read it mentions several times that the power of the congress is curently controlled by the republicans and that may be the reason that this bill is passed through congress.

    http://news.sky.com/story/1417501/uk-summons-ambassador-over-russian-bombers

Two Russian bombers flew near the United Kingdom airspace on Wednesday. The Royal Air Force kept a close watch on these two bombers the entire time they were near the UK. The bombers flew over the English Channel and near the west coast of Ireland. They flew with their transponders turned off so could only be seen on the military radar. Two UK Royal Air Force jets intercepted the bombers which were capable of carrying nuclear weapons. The Russian bombers left the area after the Royal Air Force escorted them for about hour and a half.

This relates to the Cold War between the United States and Russia. The Cold War was when many nations including US and Russia had a “tense” relationship after World War 2. There was fear of nuclear war and many countries were making a mass production of weapons. There was never any real battle where two sides fought against each other face to face. Thats why its called a cold war. During the Cold War, Russia and the United States were protective of their airspace. Any aircraft that entered the opposing nation's airspace was often shot down in air-to-air combat. The aircraft could be considered to be carrying nuclear weapons. The United Kingdom was also involved as well as many other countries such as Cuba. This is similar to the Russian bombers flying near the United Kingdom because many countries are still afraid that someone might start a nuclear war.

    Je Suis Charlie

Mark the date January 7th 2015, it will go down in French history very much like 9/11 went down in ours. Two Muslim masked men armed heavily with assault rifles forced their way into the offices of the weekly French newspaper Charlie Hebdo. Eleven people were killed while the masked gunmen shouted ‘Allahu Akbar!’ meaning God is the greatest. After the first terrorist attack was over the death toll ended in seventeen dead people across France. After this incident the world came together through Twitter and other social medias by tweeting and hash tagging “Je suis Charlie” meaning I am Charlie. The hashtag was one of the most tweeted ever and was tweeted 6,500 times a minute and had a total of 3.4 million tweets in just 24 hours. Charlie Hebdo is a famous magazine company in France equivalent to “Time” in the U.S. The spark that triggered this action from the terrorist was the picture mocking the prophet Muhammad in the Hebdo’s comic. The Hebdo’s comics don't only mock Muslims and their race, they also mock Americans, Germans, and they even mock the French. Charlie Hebdo would mock anyone in their comics in order to get a good laugh from the reader. But they crossed the line when they put an image of Muhammad in the magazine. In the Muslim race, it is against their religion to draw or talk about what Muhammad looks like. In order to represent their religion, the terrorists retaliated.

Although very different, this incident is similar to the Boston Tea Party in two ways. The first way that it is similar to the Boston Tea Party is because both the Muslims and the Americans felt that they were being treated poorly so they retaliated in drastic ways. Although the Americans in the Boston Tea Party did not show up with assault rifles and kill innocent people, they still reacted with very drastic measures by throwing thousands of dollars of tea into the harbor. The second way that both the Boston Tea Party and the terrorist strike on Charlie Hebdo were similar were both groups felt like they were being treated as inferior. Putting tariffs on tea and paper or posting an insulting image towards the Muslim religion both caused a strong reaction from the group that felt they were being improperly treated.

Recently a drone was found on White House property. It landed in a tree near the White House without detection. Airplanes, helicopters and larger drones can be easily detected by radars, but this drone was too small. This has led Obama to decide that drones need higher regulations. Also to prevent this from happening again, Chinese drone maker DJI will be disabling its drones from flying over the DC area all together. This is a surprise to many because this is the first time a Chinese company has blocked such a large area. The drones will have updated firmware for the Phantom 2, Phantom 2+, and the Phantom 2 vision. Drones already have a "No Fly system" that prevents drones from flying around over 10,000 airports and around political boundaries. They are also forbidden from flying from country to country. They will use the same system to make it so the drones do not fly over the DC area.
In 1865, Abraham Lincoln was assassinated due to poor protection. Lincoln should have had more protection especially after the Civil War because the southerners weren't very happy with him. Southerners, like John Wilkes Booth, weren't happy with Abraham Lincoln's ideas for the country. A lot of people also are not happy with Obama's decisions for the country either. Also someone could have tried to hurt Obama because they have poor protection for the White House. If someone planned on using this drone for harm they could have succeeded. Lincoln and Obama both need protection from acts like these. In both scenarios someone could have been or was hurt.

Fighting has recently resumed in Eastern Ukraine after Pro-Russian separatists abandoned the cease fire. The cease fire fell apart after the rebels continued the siege on Donetsk Airport. Both sides killed mostly civilians in a heavy artillery barrage trying to push each other back. Ukraine and its mostly western allies say that Russia is behind the rebel separatists forces. NATO claims that Russia is sending advanced military equipment across the border. Kiev says there is 9,000 troop Russian troops in Eastern Ukraine. There is also evidence of Russian soldier’s graves. Moscow denies all accusations and says the west is blackmailing Russia with heavy economic sanctions. Ukraine cannot fight the superior Russian military so they crafted the Minsk Peace Deal which was recently broken.
This can be related to the war of 1812. Russia is like England because they were far wealthier than the colonies and is attempting to reclaim land. Ukraine is like the United States who won its independence from England. Ukraine was once part of the Soviet Union and is no longer part of the Soviet Union. Also the British supported American Indian raids just like Russia is supporting separatists. The war of 1812 is very similar to the Ukrainian conflict. Only differences is that Britain had many allies during 1812 while it’s mainly Russia in the conflict. Also Britain did not try to hide the war much like Russia is doing with the “rebels”.

    new-public-employment-laws-for-2015-32495
    www.leginfo.legislature.ca.gov

Recently the state of California governor Jerry Brown has pasted what is called a “clean up” law called AB- 2751. This law is an immigrant- related protection law. It is called the “clean up law” because two other laws were created to end this problem but this new law sums both up nicely. This law says that all employers cannot use immigration status or anything related to that hold against them getting the job. If an employer were to do refuse hiring the person for the job or refuse to promote the immigrant employee, the employer could be fined up to 10,000 dollars. The money fined would be given to the employee and not the government. This new law compares to what we were talking in class about a couple days ago. After the north beat the south in the civil war, all the southern slaves were no longer slaves. They were now considered Freedmen. The problem with this though was the now free slaves had nowhere to go. None of them had jobs, or a house, or had any clue of where to go. They needed jobs fast but the southerners were not happy about the outcome of the war and would not hire the Freedmen even if they were considered one of them. The Freedmen were often paid less and had to work harder to make the same amount of money a regular white employee would make. This ties into the new immigrant-related protection law because just like the Freedmen living in the south after the Civil War they struggled finding jobs and being treated equal in the work force.

  15. The Islamic terrorist group, ISIS, was holding two Japanese men hostage. One of the Japanese men, Haruna Yukawa, was killed, because the deadline for the 200 million dollar ransom passed. The surviving man, Kenji Goto, was featured in a video posted by ISIS holding a picture of a beheaded Haruna. Now ISIS is demanding a trade for an ISIS member, Sajida al-Rishawi to return Goto. The United States was debating whether to pay the ransom, or not, and, now, whether to return Sajida to save Goto. The reason countries like Japan and the United States are hesitant towards making deals is they do not want to encourage or help terrorists. Paying ransom will influence the taking of more hostages, because the terrorists get what they want in the end, money. As of now, the United States is staying neutral in this situation, letting Japan decide was it wants to do for the hostage.
The United States attempts to stay neutral in most fights, like the French Revolution. The United States was stuck in the middle when deciding if they should be involved or not. The French lower class was inspired by the American Revolution, and wanted the United States help. Some Americans wanted to help the French, because the French were fighting for their freedom, like the USA. Others were against going to war again, and did not like the radical changes the lower class wanted to make. The government decided that it was best to stay neutral, and not risk going to war.

The Islamic State group has threatened to kill two innocent lives on Thursday if a prisoner from the al-Qaida group is not released from a death sentence and is freed from jail. This is a look at the three people whose fates hang in the balance. Sajida al-Rishawi and her husband walked into the Radisson hotel on November 9th, 2005 in Amman, Jordan. Having strapped an explosive belt to her waist, and along with her husband setting of the bomb in a wedding with 300 guests, but her’s failed to go off. This bombing was one of three consistent terrorist attacks in Amman hotels. Four days later, she was caught and sent to court. In the courthouse, she pleaded that she was only following her husbands led as an unwilling participant. Her appeal was rejected and they sentenced her to death by hanging. Journalist, Kenji Goto, and Muath, a pilot, were both kidnapped later on by ISIS. Goto got kidnapped because he tried to rescue his assistant from anti government militant group, and Muath crashed his airplane in Syria near an ISIS group and that’s where they took him. The ISIS group wants to trade Goto and Muath for the return of Saljida al-Rishawi. But Goto’s mother has begged the Jordanian government to save her son from being murdered.
This relates to The Iranian Revolution because the Islamic militants captured sixty-six Americans, eight of them being killed and the rest were just held hostage. They were taken because they didn't like the influence/blackmail America had on Iran. Overall, this shows that in both scenarios blackmailing and terrorism are still a big impact on the world.

    http://www.cbsnews.com/news/mexico-city-childrens-hospital-rocked-by-deadly-gas-explosion/

So in Mexico City there was a truck carrying gas to a hospital. The truck did that on a routine basis. The hose of the truck broke. The leak lasted for less than a half hour. There was a loud explosion. Parts of the building collapsed and suffered great damage. Although there wasn't a great number of deaths, a lot of people were injured. The employees at the hospital thought it would be best to find a safe place inside, about 10 people managed to escape outside. The hospital is a maternity hospital so there were a lot of worried mothers, and endangered newborns. Some children were separated from their mothers. The injured people were rushed to nearby hospitals. There were a lot of people and a lack of ambulances but they tried their best. Firefighters came too, and they tried their best to find everyone.

This article reminds me of the battle where the guy accidently shot and killed his son because he didn't know who he was shooting. He was a part of the military. As his group marched their way to their destination, he was commanded to shoot someone. He did as he was told. He later went over to look at the person he had just killed, and found out that it was his son. His son's last word was "father". This is like the gas explosion in Mexico City because the truck was doing a good thing like the guy. Then all of a sudden, the truck's gas leaks and hurts the people it was trying to help, just like how the old man wanted to help his country and son. Both tragedies were also both by accident. Through these accidents there were deaths, the 2 people at the hospital and the son.
